What is a carousel?

A carousel is a large toy and recreational vehicle consisting of a platform that rotates around an axis fixed to the ground or objects such as toy horses, airplanes, cars attached to hangers. It was called Carousel until two centuries ago.

It was called Carousel until two centuries ago. The most common argument on the etymology of the word is that it changed from Italian Carousse to Karaca.

However, the Italian carousse and the Spanish Garusso word mean war game and are derived from the name given to horse games for horse training and entertainment purposes, used by the Turks fighting in the Arab armies in the 11th century. There are still place names in Anatolia with the names of horse roe or horse roe.

Carousel, on the other hand, is a spectacle that has an important place in Ottoman social life. It is a show of actors who make all kinds of ridiculous jokes with the horse puppets they wear on their waists, accompanied by music. "...puppet, meddah, middle game, tuluat, village theatrical plays, minstrel encounters, baranas, chapter committees, folk dances, morons, bear charmers, carousels..."

With the disappearance of these theatrical plays from the social life, the Horseman started to be called Carousel.

The traditional types and the first of their kind consisted of wooden horses or different animals placed on a rotating platform. They not only rotate around an axis but also move up and down to simulate the running of the horse or animal.

Now not only horses or animals are used, but also models of modern machines such as cars, airplanes and even spacecrafts. While carousels are mostly found in entertainment venues such as amusement parks, they can also be found alone in many shopping centers and other parks.

While there are large and electrically powered carousels in amusement parks, a very simple carousel that is small enough for three or four children to sit can only consist of an axis fixed to the ground and 3-4 rotating seats associated with a ball bearing mechanism at right angles to it.
