Scientists employ many methods to purify water and make it safe to drink. Norma Alcantar, a chemical engineer from the University of South Florida, demonstrated in her research in Mexico that cacti could be a solution to this problem. In fact, people living in South America have been using cacti to purify their water for many years. They would boil the cacti and eat them, then pour the resulting liquid into their drinking water.
This would cause the particles on the surface to settle to the bottom, making the water potable. Alcantar and her colleagues began working to understand how the cactus accomplishes this. First, they separated an extract obtained from the plant into two forms: a gel and a liquid. In experiments using the gel component, they observed that the water was purified within 5 minutes. Processing with aluminum sulfide, commonly used in water treatment plants, takes three times longer.
The next step is to purify the drinking water of Temamatla, Mexico, using this method. Temamatla, which suffers from a shortage of clean water, has an abundant supply of cacti around its perimeter to support this process.
