Fossils are the surviving traces and remains of plants and animals that lived in very ancient times. These remains are generally structures such as bones, shells, and teeth. Learning the age of fossils allows us to gain information about that organism and the period in which it lived. Scientists use various methods to calculate the age of fossils. For fossils that are no older than 60,000 years and contain carbon, a method called "carbon-14" is generally used. There are two common types of carbon, called carbon-14 and carbon-12. Both of these are found in all living things in a certain proportion relative to each other.
After living things die, the carbon-14 in their structures decreases over time; However, the amount of carbon-12 does not change. To determine the age of a fossil, the ratio of carbon-14 and carbon-12 in its structure is measured. This ratio is compared with the carbon-14 found in the atmosphere, and the amount of carbon-14 that has decreased is determined. Thus, the age of the fossil is revealed; because it is known how much and over what period of time carbon-14 will decrease.
